ANC-PN Annual Christmas Mixer Raises Funds for Armenian Orphans |
|
Glendale, California - The Christmas season is a time of giving and once again this year, more than 200 Armenian American young professionals showed their giving spirit by making this a particularly special Christmas for 6 Armenian orphans in Karabagh. Due to the success of its initial Christmas Mixer in December 2002, the Armenian National Committee Professional Network (ANC-PN) decided to make its Christmas Mixer an annual event with proceeds being contributed to the Armenian Relief Society's (ARS) Sponsor-a-Child program in Karabagh. This year's mixer, held on December 28, 2003 at Sidebar in Glendale, blew away expectations by raising over $4,300.
The funds donated at the mixer were used to sponsor 6 children: Suzanna, Mary, Nrajin, Araik, Sassoon, and Sergei. Each of these children, ages 16 (two), 12 (two), 11 and 10, have a parent who was killed or severely wounded in the conflict to free Karabagh. The funds will be used to sponsor each child until he or she reaches the age of 18. The cost of sponsoring an Armenian child through the ARS Sponsor-a-Child program is merely $130 annually.
"Our goal was to duplicate the success of our first Christmas Mixer in 2002 where we were able to sponsor 2 children" said Vahe Shahinian, an ANC-PN Executive Committee member. "We were hoping to double that number this year, but due to the unbelievable generosity of our members, we were able to adopt 6 children this year."
The young professionals who attended the event were treated to a display which featured a letter of appreciation by Arman, an Armenian orphan who was sponsored with funds raised at the ANC-PN's initial Christmas Mixer in 2002. Also displayed were pictures of other Armenian orphans currently in need of sponsors. A copy of Arman's letter, as well as pictures of some of the children sponsored this year, can be found on the ANC-PN's website at www.ancpn.com.
"The young Armenians who attended this event deserve the praise for caring about the plight of these children whose parents are true Armenian heroes," said Raffi Hamparian, Chairman of the ANCA Western Region and member of the ANC-PN's Executive Committee. "As a community, we should be proud of the accomplishment of these professionals and their commitment to the Armenian Cause."
The ANC-PN and the ARS thank everyone for their support and efforts. It was a great opportunity to contribute to a wonderful Armenian cause during the holiday season when the true meaning of giving and receiving is often ambiguous and misinterpreted.
